The 2022 Scotty Award

HFC’s Scotty Caregiver Award a.k.a “The Scotty,” is named in honor of Scott Miller, Lauren Miller Rogen's dad, who served as a loving caregiver to his late wife and Lauren's mom, Adele. The award recognizes an unpaid caregiver for their patience, perseverance, and creativity in the face of dementia.

“People don’t always think of themselves as caregivers. In some cases, we are glad to do this and, in some cases, we are overwhelmed or frightened by it. Caregivers provide assistance to those that need help with regular tasks on a daily basis. Every day millions help older, sick, or disabled family members and friends. But there is no right or wrong when it comes to caring. While our situations may vary, the one thing we all have in common is that we care. We do our best. The Scotty is a symbol, a recognition of all the caregivers that work, strive, love, and yes, even suffer, while caring for someone afflicted with the serious effects of Alzheimer’s or one of the various forms of dementia. The Scotty is not a recognition of the best caregiver. It is not a recognition of the hardest working caregiver, nor the bravest caregiver. The Scotty represents all caregivers and the fact that at the core of it all, we care.” - Scott Miller

This year, the first-ever Scotty was awarded to Eddie Gonzalez from Brooklyn, New York.

Eddie was nominated by his daughter, Jessica, who shared, “The level of patience he has exhibited has not only been limited to his care for her, it has extended to others he has encountered who have newly entered the arena of Alzheimer's caregiving.” He has navigated the challenges of caregiving with love and kindness - helping to meet his wife’s needs without any outside assistance.

As part of this award, Eddie will receive an HFC In-Home Care Grant to help provide some relief from his caregiving duties. Thank you to Eddie and all of the caregiver nominees, for providing such incredible care to your loved ones.

We know the journey is hard - in the words of Eddie, “It’s not easy, but you just have to keep going.
